We all come to things from our own positions, of course, and we are each of us enabled and blinkered by the location of our standpoint; but we all something to learn from, and contribute to, postcolonial studies. As such, it helps to explain some of the many paradoxes of Said’s identity as a public intellectual, literary theorist and political activist.

This essay considers the role of family photographs in postcolonial life writing. This account of his early life reveals the influences that have formed his books, "Orientalism" and "Culture and Imperialism". By pointing out some of the similarities and differences between the approaches these key texts of post-colonialism take, I, however, hope to bring forth insights into debating what post-colonialism is, and how it as an analytical tactic and as an active tool of resistance can function. Many of us have places that hold special meaning for us--a family farm, a summer home, a city neighborhood or rural mountain ranch. We start with the so-called “first scene” of the modern intellectual’s birth, the manifesto led by Émile Zola publicly standing in relation to the Dreyfus Case, in the nineteenth century. Naturally, these are all texts that have been written and discussed extensively for several decades and are all endowed with incomparable richness and depth that a short essay can not do justice to. Finally, the paper returns to the question of Said's legacy as a possible contribution to our thinking about the purpose of humanistic scholarship and the role of the scholar-teacher as Said conceived it. This paper focuses primarily on the later work of Said. changes that take place in the latter as architectural works assume their place in the quotidian. All rights reserved.

This work is a mixture of emotional archeology and memory, exploring an Essentially irrecoverable past. I argue that one of the characteristics of this history has been a schism between critics of life writing and life writers themselves, a schism that echoes the well known ambivalence literary critics and writers generally feel towards each other even as, ironically, there has always been crossover between groups.
