Returning after a period of time, Laing photographed natures encroachment on this incongruous carpet, not only as a symbol of British invasion but of the domestication of this land. In a panoramic photograph, stage-directed rather than manipulated through digital methods, Laing has invaded the natural South Coast landscape with the 1970s British 'Royal Persian Rose Petal' carpet, not only as a symbol of invasion but of the domestication of the land.
For the series including groundspeed (Red Piazza) #3 (2001), Laing famously undertook the arduous laying of real carpet in an Australian coastal forest, re-flooring it with a generic English-style domestic floral patterned carpet. Her highly detailed, intentional compositions meditate upon humankind’s complicated relationship to the natural environment. Laing produces her carefully orchestrated panaromic photographs in series. Bulletproof glass is a series of images shot on location in the Blue Mountains, featuring women dressed in vintage wedding dresses with gunshot wounds to the chest whilst 'floating' in the sky. Australian colonial landscape painting and its attendant socio-political ramifications also inform Laing’s expansive practice as she develops distinctive ways to comprehend our relationship with our environment.
