The dark side and hypocrisy of provincial American life is seen through the eyes of five children as they grow to adulthood at the turn-of-the-century. It's an aggressive film where the violence packs a punch, and the ending has a considerable black heart. The cast are mostly effective.
When Laura Mansfield's father is killed by a delivery man, the police has few clues and the investigation drags on but Laura decides to find the killer on her own. Great to have both the 1946 and 1964 versions together, it's a close run thing but I think that I prefer the Clu Gulager version.
In fact, in some ways Lancaster and the lovely Ava Gardner (who broke Frank Sinatra's heart, in real life) are window dressing to O'Brien's real character arc. This DVD came with two films: the original film The Killers (1946) with Burt Lancaster and Ava Gardner and a 1964 remake by the same name. I will not go into the plot, others have done that we'll enough. The Killers is also notable for its cleverly designed (if rather extended) flashback structure – a noir staple, of course, but here related by an apparently endless stream of (mainly) peripheral characters – and some impressive black-and-white cinematography by Woody Bredell. Perhaps not surprisingly Burt Lancaster and Ava Gardner get top billing on the card, but the main event is Edmond O/Brien, who is spot on as an Insurance Investigator trying to piece together the sad life of Lancaster's faded prize fighter.

The "free adaption" here, remarkably is nearly all the back story, as, again if I recall correctly the Hemingway story primarily concerns the murder of Lancaster's character, where the film tells the whole story about how he gets to the point where he has to be killed in the first place. Avec chez les deux, les couples les plus torrides de leur époque : Burt Lancaster-Ava Gardner et John Cassavettes-Angie Dickinson. Please try again. Two slight disappointments for me. Two hit men have an order to kill a seemingly mild-mannered schoolteacher and they find out the victim was involved in an armored car heist years back as well as a love triangle involving the girlfriend of a major mob figure. The first is poetic and shadowy, the second direct and harsh as daylight, but both get at the heart of Hemingway’s existential classic.
Marvin and Gulager's hit-man pairing are deliberately off kilter in terms of personality, and it's these two that propel the movie forward (well backwards really). Why?
What ensues is the stuff film noir is made of and a film you'll be glad you didn't miss and can watch again, and again and again!
The Killers (1964) The 1964 remake (of sorts) by Don Siegel builds another whole world around Hemingway's narrow, if intense, premise. This shopping feature will continue to load items when the Enter key is pressed. 7.5/10.
A wonderful bluray restoration of a great old movie, I saw it when it was new In 1946. La version noir et blanc (au couteau) de Siodmak est magnifique mais celle en couleurs de Siegel (qui avait déjà été pressenti pour réaliser la 1ère !) Edition) [Blu-ray]. A solid "Hollywood System" entry, and an example of how well a literary work can be adapted for the medium of film.
Kiss Me Deadly (The Criterion Collection), The Asphalt Jungle (The Criterion Collection). Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2017. Originally shot for television but rejected for its violence, Siegel's film is a blistering experience of swimming against the currents of fate for one's survival--and losing. I like value. The Killers (1946) This 1946 adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's short story adds well over an hour of new material to the original tale.
Arrived on time and as promised.
The reason is, while director Robert Siodmak, star Burt Lancaster, and an outstanding supporting cast are faithful to Hemingway's work, his story only takes up about 15 minutes of screen time.

Lovely Angie Dickinson plays the femme fatale. 1 Ernest Hemingway story, 2 different movie takes, very cool.
Ava Gardner’s femme fatale and sultry temptress Kitty Collins is at the heart of Robert Siodmak’s impressive 1946 noir, switching her allegiances (in true noir style) between Burt Lancaster’s hunky, self-destructive ex-boxer, Ole 'the Swede’ Andreson, and Albert Dekker’s suave criminal mastermind, 'Big’ Jim Colfax. The 1946 film is classic film noir. This one in particular draws you in immediately and keeps you riveted. It's no surprise to learn later on down the line that he wasn't very fond of the role.Good quality neo-noir crafted by a man who knew how to do the real deal back in the day.
(1964).
