As a result, "What We Do in the Shadows" is an irrepressibly charming B-movie that never over-stays its welcome, and is both conceptually clever and admirably well-executed. They bite a faintly annoying guy, who duly turns into a vampire and wants to hang out with them, and he brings along his best mate, a really nice non-vampire human bloke called Stu: all the vampires get a bromance crush, holding back from biting him and he is the Bella Swan of this story. At times, it feels as though the show’s main goal is to present witty wordplay voiced by a few memorable characters. Other standouts include Beanie Feldstein (of “Lady Bird”) as a young woman turned to vampirism and Mark Proksch as the show’s one truly ingenious creation — an “energy vampire” who thrives off of boring those near him practically to death.
So many comedies are adoringly billed as “dark”, forgetting the ancient showbusiness maxim, “dark is easy; funny is hard”.
Like their characters, New Zealand co-writers/directors/stars Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi have their seemingly-improvised routines down cold. Does the movie justice without repeating the same themes.
